Logline: A once-thriving lifeline for thousands, Laguna de Bay now tells a quiet story of decline as pollution threatens both the livelihood of fishermen and the quality of the food on Filipino tables. Through science and lived experiences, the documentary reveals how the lake's worsening condition ripples from ecosystem to economy, and ultimately, to us.
Synopsis: This documentary explores the evolving condition of Laguna de Bay, the largest lake in the Philippines, and the lifeline it provides to surrounding communities. Once abundant with fish and opportunity, the lake has long sustained thousands of fishermen, supported local markets, and contributed to the country's economy. Through interviews with fishermen and community members, the film presents a grounded portrayal of life shaped by the lake. However, beneath this dependence lies a growing crisis. Over the years, pollution, improper waste disposal, and environmental neglect have led to a significant decline in fish production, directly affecting livelihoods. What used to be nets full of fish are now often mixed with plastic and debris, reflecting a deeper environmental issue. The documentary also bridges science with everyday life by explaining how water quality influences not only the quantity but also the taste and safety of fish. It highlights how pollutants and microorganisms can alter flavor and potentially introduce harmful substances into the food chain, making the issue not just environmental, but also a public health concern. Laguna de Bay becomes more than just a setting---it becomes a symbol of the consequences of human actions. The film ends with a call to action, urging communities to take responsibility through sustainable practices and collective effort.
