Logline: In a very far-flung area where connectivity is scarce, Neneng, a determined Senior High student climbs to a precarious elevated spot each day to attend online classes, turning a fragile internet service into a lifeline toward education and the promise of progress for both self and community.
Synopsis: Set in a very far-flung area navigating the demands of pandemic-era distance learning, Ang Signal Gikan sa Taas (The Signal From Above) follows Neneng, a 16-year-old student determined to complete the school year despite the absence of reliable connectivity at home. As online classes become her only bridge to education, she discovers that a fragile service can be accessed only from a nearby elevated clearing, compelling her into a daily ascent that tests both endurance and resolve. Balancing academic pressure with the realities of poverty and household endeavors alongside her older sister, Julia, Neneng’s routine unfolds across changing weather, time, and circumstance. The uphill becomes a solitary space where determination quietly confronts limitation, and where each successful connection carries the weight of what is at stake. As deadlines draw near, a modest yet significant outcome affirms the impact of her perseverance — not as a triumphant spectacle, but as a restrained moment of recognition that suggests the possibility of forward movement for a life shaped by constraint. The film closes on Neneng’s descent at dusk, leaving the audience with a contemplative portrait of resilience, aspiration, and the quiet pursuit of kalamboan (progress).
